CHARLES SCHWAB BIRDS OF PREY RACE WEEK OFFERS
VAIL VALLEY A SHOWCASE FOR 2013 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS BID

BEAVER CREEK, Colorado--While it may not be a full dress rehearsal, the Vail Valley most definitely has a unique opportunity to make a favorable impression on the world November 29 through December 2 when the world’s top racers descend on Beaver Creek for the 2007 Charles Schwab Birds of Prey Race Week.

The four-event extravaganza will not only mark the lone U.S. men’s World Cup event this winter, but it will also serve as a tremendous springboard opportunity for Vail and Beaver Creek’s bid to host the 2013 World Alpine Ski Championships.

With the Championships vote just six months away when the first racer leaves the start gate, the Vail Valley will have its chance to send a loud and clear message to the world that they are welcome back in 2013.

“We had a similar situation in 1994,” explained Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation.  “We were in the home stretch for the 1999 World Championships campaign and were hosting the World Cup Finals, just two months prior to the vote.  The entire community turned out for the races in Vail 99 gear and sent a clear message to the FIS officials and teams that they wanted the Championships.  We have that same opportunity with the Charles Schwab Birds of Prey Race Week.”

In addition to the international teams and media members that will gather for the Beaver Creek races, numerous FIS officials will be on hand as well, all tuned in to the overall organization and community support as they finalize their choices for the site that will host the 2013 World Championships.

Aside from the racing action, residents and guests will also have a chance to lend their support to the cause at the Public Presentation and 2013 Pep Rally, Thursday evening, November 29, on the plaza in Beaver Creek. Along with the World Cup Downhill bib presentation to the top athletes, families will have the chance to have their picture taken with Santa and his reindeer before enjoying the sounds of roots rockers Cracker in a free World Cup concert.

“The Charles Schwab Birds of Prey Race Week is a great event to get caught up in and to enjoy as a family, whether you’re a ski racing fan or not,” Folz added.  “And, we have the chance to send the message to the world that this community is solidly behind the 2013 World Championships effort.  We urge everyone to plan to be a part of any or all activities and help us send that message loud and clear.”

The 2007 Charles Schwab Birds of Prey Race Week will include Super CombinedDownhillSuper-G and Giant Slalom competitions on Beaver Creek’s Birds of Prey racecourse.  All race and Pep Rally activities are free and open to the public.

The 2007 Charles Schwab Birds of Prey is a project of the Vail Valley Foundation.  For additional information Birds of Prey, visit www.bcworldcup.com.  For more information on the Foundation, contact (970) 949-1999 or visit www.vvf.org.
