DRIFTING SNOW CANCELS SECOND DOWNHILL TRAINING RUN FOR
AUDI BIRDS OF PREY RACE WEEK
SUPER COMBINED RACES ON TAP FOR THURSDAY
BEAVER CREEK, Colorado—Accumulations of up to five inches of new snow that drifted into many of the compressions on Beaver Creek’s Birds of Prey racecourse Tuesday evening resulted in the cancellation of the second day of men’s downhill training Wednesday in preparation for Thursday’s opening event of the 2008 Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week.
Officials and the Birds of Prey race crew worked through the night Monday to ensure Tuesday’s training run, anticipating that there was a chance that weather might adversely affect the second training run. Tuesday’s fastest training run time was posted by American Bode Miller.
“The majority of the racers are very familiar with the Birds of Prey course,” explained Michael Imhof, Vice President of Sales and Operations for the Vail Valley Foundation, “so one training run is going to be sufficient. The decision on Wednesday’s cancellation was made to ensure that our course crews had ample time to make sure the course is race ready for Super Combined tomorrow.”
The Super Combined, one run of downhill and one run of slalom, will officially kick off the competition at the 2008 Audi Birds of Prey, with the downhill scheduled for an 11 a.m. start and the slalom portion set to go at 2:30 p.m.
In addition to Super Combined, the 2008 Audi Birds of Prey Race Week will include Downhill on Friday, Super-G on Saturday and Giant Slalom on Sunday. All races are free and open to the public.
The 2008 Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week is a project of the Vail Valley Foundation. For more information on Birds of Prey, visit www.bcworldcup.com. For additional information on the Vail Valley Foundation, check out www.vvf.org.
