4-RACE 2008 SCHEDULE CONFIRMED FOR BEAVER CREEK’S BIRDS OF PREY WORLD CUP
BEAVER CREEK, Colorado—While the lion’s share of the Vail Valley’s attention was focused on the outcome of the vote for the 2013 World Alpine Ski Championships during the recent International Ski Federation (FIS) Congress in Cape Town, South Africa, the valley’s ski racing legacy was further bolstered as the World Cup Committee once again confirmed a four-race schedule for Birds of Prey this coming winter.
Slated for December 4-7, the 2008 Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week will include men’s Downhill, Super-G, Giant Slalom and Super Combined events. The current schedule features Super-G on Thursday, December 4; Downhill on Friday, December 5; Super Combined on Saturday, December 6; and Giant Slalom on Sunday, December 7.
“While it was disappointing to not be able to bring back a 2013 World Championships,” explained Michael Imhof, Vice President of Sales and Operations for the Vail Valley Foundation, “the fact that FIS has once again entrusted us with four races for Birds of Prey speaks volumes about what this community has accomplished in ski racing. The brand awareness that has been established for these events is well recognized and respected throughout the world.”
Birds of Prey will once again mark the only men’s World Cup event in the United States and the only World Cup site for either men or women to feature four events, aside from the World Cup Finals in Are, Sweden. It will also provide U.S. ski racing fans with an early-season men’s preview of the 2009 World Alpine Ski Championships in Val d’Isere, France.
“Birds of Prey will also mark the only opportunity for U.S. race fans to see World Cup Overall champion Bode Miller and World Cup Giant Slalom champ Ted Ligety compete,” Imhof concluded. “The U.S. Ski Team has always made the most of the home field advantage at Beaver Creek and coming off the tremendous successes of last winter, we’re looking forward to another great week of racing at Birds of Prey.”
