While the lion’s share of the conversation centered around goals and expectations for the coming winter, reigning women’s Overall World Cup champion Lindsey Vonn managed to get in a plug for Vail/Beaver Creek’s 2015 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships during the annual Forum Alpinum in Soelden, Austria.
The Forum Alpinum, a gathering of international journalists, top World Cup athletes, coaches and officials, has been held in Soelden for the past 13 years on the eve of the opening World Cup races of the new season on the Rettenbach Glacier.
Vonn, sharing the stage with men’s Overall World Cup winner Carlo Janka of Switzerland, answered questions posed by moderator Nick Fellows, while the assembled journalists from around the globe took notes.
Near the end of the interview, Fellows, a television commentator for Eurosport, said jokingly to Vonn, “I hear a rumor that the 2015 World Championships are in Vail. Have you heard anything about this?”
Vonn, sporting a huge grin, replied, “I was jumping up and down when I heard that Vail and Beaver Creek had won the World Championships. Depending on how I’m feeling and skiing, Vail in 2015 would be a great place to end my career. I’m not too old so you never know, but I do know that Vail 2015 is going to be a really cool World Championships.”
